چکیده

Induced charge-density (ICD) oscillations at the Cu(111) surface caused by an external impurity are studied within linear response theory. The calculation takes into account such properties of the Cu(111) surface electronic structure as an energy gap for three-dimensional (3D) bulk electrons and a s − pz surface state that forms two-dimensional (2D) electron system. It is demonstrated that the coexistence of these 2D and 3D electron systems has profound impact on the ICD in the surface region. In the case of a static impurity the characteristic ICD oscillations with the 1/ρ decay as a function of lateral distance, ρ, are established in both electron systems. For the impurity with a periodically time-varying potential, the novel dominant ICD oscillations which fall off like ∼ 1/ρ are predicted.

Near-field Optical Excitation and Detection of Surface Plasmons

By definition surface plasmons are the quanta of surface-charge-density oscillations, but the same terminology is commonly used for collective oscillations in the electron density at the surface of a metal. Because the surface charge oscillations are intimately coupled to electromagnetic fields, surface plasmons are polaritons. In the past, surface plasmons have attracted considerable attention...

Theory of surface phonons at metal surfaces: recent advances.

Recent studies of the surface dynamics of Al(001) and Cu(111) based on density functional perturbation theory have substantiated the existence of subsurface optical phonon resonances of all three polarizations, thus confirming early predictions of the embedded-atom method. The hybridization of the shear-vertical optical resonance with the longitudinal acoustic phonon branch accounts for the ubi...

Quantum conductance oscillations in metal/molecule/metal switches at room temperature.

We apply pressure-modulated conductance microscopy to metal/molecule/metal switches. Apart from pressure-induced conductance peaks that indicate nanoscale conducting pathways, we also observe dips and oscillations for devices with conductance between 1 and 2 conductance quantum. The conductance oscillations arise from interfering electron waves along one or two quantum conductance channels betw...

Electric double layer at metal oxide surfaces: static properties of the cassiterite-water interface.

The structure of water at the (110) surface of cassiterite (alpha-SnO2) at ambient conditions was studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations and X-ray crystal truncation rod experiments and interpreted with the help of the revised MUSIC model of surface protonation. The interactions of the metal oxide in the simulations were described by a recently developed classical force field based ...
